Chapter Fourteen: Reunited

Outside the Assembly Hall, Jae and Jerren stopped Dalton before he shifted and headed back to Tampa. He wasn't very appreciative of their interference.

"I'm going back to her. Don't even waste your time trying to stop me."

Jerren shook his head. "No shit, stupid. I can't think of a single person who would think you weren’t going back. But you need to be smart about it."

"I know what I'm doing."

"And so do the enforcers, you hot head," Jae stated as he folded his arms. "One blast of that energy of theirs and you're no good to anyone, including yourself. Why don't you try listening just for a minute."

Dalton put his hands on his hips. "I'm listening."

"Jerren and I are going to stay here and wait for Dyvana to see if she can figure out what's going on. I know there's no sense telling you to wait. I wouldn't if it were Sona. But you need to be extremely careful when you get back there."

Jerren agreed. "Stay out of their energy range. They always try to be close when they blast us, and you know what happens when we get hit."

"We'll be there as soon as we get some information. Go. We'll catch up."

"Thanks to both of you. I'll do my best not to get zapped." He looked at both of his brothers. "And I don't for a second think that Kennie had anything to do with starting a fire."

Jae glanced at Jerren. "If she did, she may not have known anything about it. If Rayna is using her black magic, Kennie may not be responsible for her own actions."

Dalton exhaled. "But she'll accept the responsibility. And I'm not sure she could handle knowing someone died because of her, witchcraft interference or not. That's just how she is."

He left his brothers standing there as he took to the sky. Right now, getting back to Kenna was the most important thing in the world. He suddenly regretted every time he'd ever teased Dev or Jae about their infatuations with their mates. He now knew exactly how they felt.

He also felt the guilt for leaving Kenna in the first place. By disappearing to keep her safe, he'd done nothing more than give Rayna, or whoever was pulling the strings, full access to their target. Unprotected.

He flew straight to Kenna's condo building and landed in a clump of woods about a block away. At this point, being seen wasn't his concern. Whoever pointed him out would just be considered a drug user. He'd make sure of that.

The doorman stopped him. "May I help you?"

"I need to see Kennie... err, McKenna. Daniels. Do you know if she's home?"

He nodded. "She is. Just arrived about half an hour ago." He held out his hand. "I'm Stan, the doorman. And you are?"

"Dalton. Dalton Striar. Can you ring her for me?"

Stan strode over to the front desk and spoke to the girl sitting there before he returned. "Ms. Daniels seemed upset when she arrived home."

"Upset?"

"Not hysterical, crying upset.
